Story Behind the Art: Sarouk rugs are associated with the weaving districts around Arak and the Farahan plain in central Iran, a region recognized for strong foundations, refined knotting, and enduring floral design. Nineteenth-century examples often featured tightly organized all-over patterns such as Herati and Gul Hennai, worked with asymmetric knots over sturdy cotton structures. Toward the end of that century, the influence of formal Tabriz carpets encouraged a shift toward more symmetrical layouts centered on elaborate floral medallions. After World War I, Sarouk weavers introduced a looser and more open arrangement in which detached bouquets and floral sprays were distributed across the field. This softer composition became one of the tradition’s most recognizable features and helped Sarouk rugs gain broad international popularity. The style continues to inspire weaving in several countries, preserving its characteristic floral elegance, balanced structure, and strong connection to Persian decorative art.
