Story Behind the Art: Soumak rugs belong to an old flatweaving tradition recognized for a distinctive wrapping technique rather than conventional knotted pile construction. In this method, colored weft yarns are wrapped around the structural warps, producing a textured surface with an embroidered appearance and sharply articulated motifs. Historically associated with weaving cultures across the Caucasus, Persia, Anatolia, and neighboring regions, Soumak construction was used for floor coverings as well as bags and other functional textiles. Geometric medallions, angular flowers, tribal symbols, stylized animals, and repeating borders commonly appear throughout the design vocabulary. Wool has long been a favored material because of its strength, texture, and ability to hold varied color. Modern Soumak rugs continue to preserve the low-profile construction and graphic character of the tradition while adapting motifs and palettes for contemporary interiors.
