Story Behind the Art: Originating from Arak and the Farahan plains of central Iran, Sarouk rugs represent centuries of Persian weaving mastery. In the 19th century, they showcased finely detailed Herati and Gul Hennai patterns, woven with around 100 asymmetric knots per square inch on sturdy cotton foundations. As Tabriz influences spread in the late 1800s, Sarouk artisans began creating formal medallion-centered carpets defined by symmetry and elaborate floral work. After World War I, a new design evolution emerged—the “American Sarouk” style—featuring open fields scattered with graceful detached floral sprays. This fresh aesthetic captivated Western markets and became the signature of Sarouk artistry. Today, the tradition endures across Iran, India, Romania, and Pakistan, where artisans continue to interpret these classical motifs with precision and reverence, preserving Sarouk’s balance of refinement, heritage, and universal beauty.
