LoomBloom Brown Teal 9'6''x12'5'' Traditional Distressed Oushak Wool Hand Knotted Oriental Area Rug

$1,499.00 $4,497.00
Soft color, an aged finish and a sturdy wool pile are the draw of this hand knotted Oushak in brown and teal. The sage green and ivory field looks pleasantly faded, centered on a diamond medallion that gray florals seem to melt around. An ivory border of leaves and rosettes frames the whole rug, and the small leaves stay sharp against the mellow colors. Dense wool bounces back from foot traffic, and the pile is friendly to kids and pets, so this traditional area rug works in the rooms where life really happens. Short fringe gives the ends a finished edge. A routine of frequent vacuuming, with the brush roll off, keeps the pile fresh. Sage, ivory and gray get along well with tan and cream accents, which helps the rug slip into a family room, bedroom, dining room or home office without fuss. The distressed look gives a hand knotted wool rug an easy, welcoming personality, and the faded tones suit quiet, layered spaces as well as lively ones.

Story Behind the Art: Distressed rugs grew out of the market for worn antiques. Old Persian and Anatolian rugs, thinned by decades of foot traffic, became highly sought after for their faded color and uneven texture, and weavers in Turkey, India, and Afghanistan started producing new rugs with that character built in. A distressed rug is hand knotted as usual, then sheared low, washed with stone or sun-dried to soften the dyes, and sometimes lightly abraded in places so the foundation peeks through. The result looks like it has spent a century in a room, yet the knots are new and the wool has all its strength still to come.
