Story Behind the Art: For centuries, Tibetans have used rugs both for practical and decorative purposes, incorporating geometric patterns, auspicious symbols, animals (real and mythical), and nature-inspired motifs. The commercial revival of Tibetan rug weaving began in 1959 after the Chinese invasion of Tibet, leading to the growth of the Tibetan diaspora in Nepal and India. The 1970s saw Tibetan rugs gain international popularity. Nepalese artisans, who were brought in to meet the demand, helped preserve and continue the tradition. Tibetan rugs are known for their slit-loop technique, known as the Tibetan knot, creating a pile that offers depth, texture, and richness. Modern designs include both traditional Tibetan motifs and more contemporary patterns.
