Tibetan rugs have been used for generations as both decorative and useful pieces, with intricate designs influenced by geometric patterns, auspicious symbols, mythological and actual creatures, and natural elements. These bold, colorful masterpieces represent the region's artistic and cultural legacy. However, it wasn't until the 1959 Chinese invasion of Tibet and accompanying migration of Tibetans to Nepal and India that the craft had a substantial commercial renaissance. By the 1970s, global demand for Tibetan rugs had skyrocketed, with Nepalese artists playing vital roles in conserving and growing this rich weaving heritage. Unlike other Asian rugs, which are created using the Turkish or Persian (Senneh) knot, Tibetan carpets are made using a distinct slit-loop method known as the Tibetan knot. Wrap a continuous length of yarn around a rod strung across the loom's warps. Once the rod is wrapped, the yarn is cut with a knife, resulting in two rows of pile tufts that add depth, texture, and richness to the rug. Traditional Tibetan rug themes frequently incorporate Buddhist symbolism, demonstrating the religion's tremendous impact on Tibetan art and culture. Over antiquity, Chinese-inspired motifs like phoenixes, dragons, and lotuses have been integrated into the patterns, increasing their artistic diversity. Modern Tibetan, Nepalese, and Indo-Tibetan rugs incorporate both traditional and contemporary motifs. These rugs are timeless treasures of art and culture, featuring interpretations of ancient Tibetan themes such as flower patterns and snow lions, as well as vibrant, free-form modern patterns.
